How to Get Noticed as a Mid-Level Lawyer πŸ”¦

Most of my clients are LASER focussed on doing good work.

They want to be perceived as competent, reliable, capable.

All good things.

And those things will probably get you very nicely from junior to mid-level positions. Head-down, high billable, produce good quality work.

Where I see lawyers stall, is when they don’t update that strategy as they become more senior. They hope the work alone will be enough to get them to the next level.

I’m not saying that never happens, but it’s a risky strategy.

Because progression comes from PERCEIVED value.

And simply hoping, that the right people notice all of your expertise, is risky.

Not to mention, that the very act of becoming more visible (speaking-up, promoting your team, taking the lead etc.) are all necessary skills for senior roles.

So, how to get noticed?

Well, you could get drunk at the next firm party, dance on a table and yell-sing Beyoncé at the top of your voice… πŸ₯³

Ok, don’t do that. For a few reasons… but mostly because getting YOU noticed is not really the point.

What we’re trying to do is raise the profile of your VALUE. And that can be a helpful perspective if you get the ‘ick’ whenever someone mentions ‘self-promotion’.

Try thinking about visibility from a value perspective….

➑️ How can you create more value WHILE raising your visibility?

For example:

βœ… Speaking-up in team meetings to share knowledge from recent matters

βœ… Publicly praising your team on completion of complex projects.

The exact strategy will be context specific. But honestly, the biggest barriers in my experience are lack of confidence; fear of being seen as arrogant / self-aggrandising; or difficultly in prioritising anything other than ‘urgent’ billable work.

And this is why cleaning up your mindset is CRUCIAL for getting ahead.

But, if you already KNEW the importance, and you’re still not doing it, or if the whole thing makes you feel uncomfortable, it’s time to take a new approach.
