I used to HATE doing anything related to profile-raising. π
I associated it with arrogant, self-aggrandising people, who were probably bad at their job and trying to fool us all with their slimy self-promotion.
Wow! Those words just rolled a little too easily off my tongue. π
Glimpse into my brain of 10-years ago.
Anyway, those lovely beliefs meant that my whole strategy for advancement was – head-down, do a good job and hope the right people would notice.
Until… I realised that they weren’t noticing.
Because they had no idea who I was! π€·βοΈ
So, here’s how I started to raise my profile, without feeling ‘ick’ about it:
β I looked for opportunities to work with new people - other partners in my team, in the US office, in related practice areas with overlapping work.
β I ran training sessions for other teams so that they understood the basics of my practice area and knew when they should bring questions to us.
β I emailed the group with little data points from any interesting projects or negotiations that might be relevant to their own work.
And none of that felt ‘ick’ because it didn’t seem like I was ‘promoting’ myself. I was just finding ways to add value to a broader set of people.
