How do you feel about giving “tough” feedback to juniors?
Or holding them to account if they miss deadlines?
A lot of my clients struggle with this…. because they don’t want to be harsh or unkind. They value being approachable and “nice” to work with.
If any of this resonates, I have some good news....
β‘οΈ You don’t need to be an ars**ole, to get great results from your team. π In fact, being an ars**ole is a pretty stupid leadership strategy.
So, you’re on the right track. Just a couple of tweaks needed:
β Focus on giving clear, honest and actionable feedback from a place of respect. It IS respectful to give ambitious adults feedback that will protect their job security and progression. And it’s definitely NOT kind or respectful to hide from these conversations just because they make YOU feel uncomfortable.
β Focus on holding people to account (for missed deadlines etc) calmly and curiously. Assume they are smart and well-intentioned, start the conversation from there.
It’s less about finding the perfect words for these situations and more about flipping your internal narrative. Try coming at it from a place of service….
Ultimately, you’re much more likely to gain the respect and trust of your team if you’re WILLING to have these conversations ... and you DEFINITELY don't need to turn into an ars**ole in the process.
